Genuine Mazda NA01-41-920C Clutch Release / Slave Cylinder

Replacement Genuine Mazda clutch release cylinder for Mazda MX-5 Mk1 NA, Mk2 NB and Mk2.5 NB-FL models with manual transmission.

Commonly known as the clutch slave cylinder, this component mounts externally to the gearbox bellhousing and converts hydraulic pressure from the clutch master cylinder into movement of the clutch release mechanism.

When the clutch pedal is pressed, hydraulic fluid travels through the clutch pipe to the release cylinder. The cylinder piston and pushrod move the clutch fork, allowing the clutch to disengage for gear selection.

Internal seal wear, corrosion inside the cylinder bore or contaminated hydraulic fluid can allow the cylinder to leak or lose pressure. Reduced hydraulic movement can prevent the clutch from disengaging completely and make gear selection difficult.

One clutch release cylinder is fitted per vehicle, and this listing supplies one Genuine Mazda cylinder. This component is suitable for manual-transmission vehicles only.

  • Part type: Clutch release cylinder
  • Common name: Clutch slave cylinder
  • Mazda catalogue description: Cyl., Clutch Release

  • MX-5 fitment: Mk1 NA, Mk2 NB and Mk2.5 NB-FL manual models

Possible signs of a failing clutch release cylinder:

  • Soft, spongy or sinking clutch pedal
  • Difficulty selecting first or reverse gear
  • Clutch failing to disengage completely
  • Gear crunching with the clutch pedal fully pressed
  • Reduced movement at the clutch release fork
  • Hydraulic fluid leaking around the cylinder
  • Falling fluid level in the clutch reservoir
  • Air repeatedly entering the clutch hydraulic system

Fitment advice: This cylinder is suitable for Mazda MX-5 NA and NB models with manual transmission. Automatic-transmission vehicles do not use a clutch release cylinder. Confirm that the vehicle retains the original Mazda gearbox, clutch fork and hydraulic arrangement where drivetrain components have been converted or replaced.

Other items to consider: Inspect the clutch master cylinder, rigid and flexible hydraulic pipes, pipe unions, clutch fork, pushrod contact point and hydraulic-fluid condition. A leaking master cylinder or damaged pipe can produce symptoms similar to a defective slave cylinder.

Useful tools / consumables: Suitable socket and spanner set, flare-nut spanner, bleed hose, fluid-catching container, brake and clutch fluid of the specified grade, brake cleaner and calibrated torque wrench.

Difficulty guide: DIY Difficulty: Moderate. Access is beneath the vehicle, and the hydraulic union must be disconnected without rounding or cross-threading it. The clutch system must be bled completely after installation.

Why Genuine Mazda? Genuine Mazda clutch hydraulic components are manufactured to match the original gearbox mounting points, hydraulic connection, cylinder bore, piston travel and clutch-release geometry. Correct dimensions help provide consistent clutch disengagement and compatibility with the original hydraulic system.

What’s in the box: One Genuine Mazda clutch release / slave cylinder, part number NA01-41-920C.

Installation notes: Clean the area around the hydraulic union before dismantling and protect surrounding surfaces from hydraulic fluid. Disconnect the pipe carefully, remove the cylinder and inspect the clutch-fork contact point. Fit the replacement cylinder in the original orientation and start the hydraulic union by hand to prevent cross-threading. Refill the reservoir with the specified fluid and bleed the system until all air has been removed. Check the pipe union and cylinder for leaks and confirm full clutch disengagement before road use.
