Genuine Mazda MA03-27-165 Differential Pinion Oil Seal / Front Differential Seal

Replacement Genuine Mazda differential pinion oil seal for Mazda MX-5 Mk3, Mk3.5 and Mk3.75 NC models with open or limited-slip rear differentials.

This seal is installed at the front of the differential housing, behind the companion flange to which the propshaft is attached. Its sealing lip runs against the flange surface and retains the differential lubricant while the pinion shaft rotates.

A worn, hardened or damaged seal can allow differential oil to escape around the input flange. The rotating flange and propshaft may then spread the oil across the differential casing and surrounding underside of the vehicle.

Continued oil loss can lower the differential lubricant level and increase the risk of accelerated wear or damage to the pinion bearings, differential bearings and gear teeth.

There is one pinion oil seal fitted per differential assembly. This listing supplies one Genuine Mazda seal. The companion flange, lock nut, washer and differential oil are not included.

  • Part type: Differential pinion oil seal
  • Common names: Front differential seal / differential input seal / pinion flange seal
  • Mazda catalogue description: Seal, Oil
  • Primary use: Retains differential oil around the rotating pinion or input flange
  • Location: Front of the rear differential housing, behind the companion flange
  • Differential compatibility: Applicable open and factory limited-slip differential assemblies
  • Quantity fitted per differential: 1
  • Quantity supplied: 1 oil seal
  • Companion flange included: No
  • Flange lock nut and washer included: No
  • Differential oil included: No
  • Brand: Genuine Mazda
  • Part No.: MA03-27-165
  • Also referenced as: MA0327165
  • MX-5 fitment: Mk3, Mk3.5 and Mk3.75 NC models

Possible signs of a leaking differential pinion seal:

  • Oil visible around the differential input or companion flange
  • Oil sprayed onto the differential casing or surrounding underbody
  • Differential lubricant level falling between services
  • Oil collecting near the front underside of the differential
  • Whining or bearing noise if lubricant loss has been allowed to continue

Fitment advice: This seal is confirmed for Mazda MX-5 NC rear differential assemblies, including applicable open and factory limited-slip units. Confirm that the vehicle retains the original NC differential and companion-flange arrangement where a replacement differential or drivetrain conversion has been fitted.

Important preload warning: Removing the companion flange and pinion lock nut can affect the pinion-bearing preload if the nut is overtightened or returned to an incorrect position. Record the original nut position and rotational resistance before dismantling, and follow the applicable Mazda workshop procedure during reassembly.

Other items to consider: Inspect the companion-flange sealing surface, pinion lock nut, lock washer, differential breather, propshaft joint and differential oil. A grooved, corroded or damaged flange surface can cause a new seal to leak prematurely.

Useful tools / consumables: Suitable socket and breaker bar, flange-holding tool, torque wrench, rotational-preload measuring equipment, seal puller, correctly sized seal driver, drain container, differential oil and suitable marking tools.

Difficulty guide: DIY Difficulty: Advanced. The propshaft and differential companion flange must be removed. Correct reassembly requires careful control of the pinion lock nut and bearing preload. Incorrect adjustment can cause differential noise, bearing damage or premature failure.

Why Genuine Mazda? Genuine Mazda differential seals are manufactured to match the original housing bore, companion-flange diameter, sealing-lip profile and installation depth. Correct dimensions help retain the specified lubricant while allowing the pinion flange to rotate freely.

What’s in the box: One Genuine Mazda differential pinion oil seal, part number MA03-27-165.

Installation notes: Raise and support the vehicle safely, drain the differential oil as required and mark the relationship between the propshaft and companion flange before removal. Measure or record the original pinion rotational resistance and mark the lock-nut position. Remove the flange without damaging its sealing surface, extract the old seal and clean the housing bore. Lubricate the new seal lip with clean differential oil and install the seal squarely to the specified depth. Refit the flange and lock hardware in accordance with the Mazda workshop procedure, taking care not to increase the original pinion-bearing preload. Refill with the correct differential oil and inspect the seal for leakage.
