RIDEX 1260W0121 Mechanical Engine Water Pump – MX-5 Mk1 1.6
Replacement RIDEX mechanical engine water pump for Mazda MX-5 Mk1/NA 1.6-litre petrol models listed in the compatibility table.
The water pump circulates coolant through the engine, cylinder head, radiator and heating system. This controlled circulation removes excess heat from the engine and helps maintain a stable operating temperature.
The pump has a cast-aluminium body and incorporates a seven-vane metal impeller measuring approximately 71 mm in diameter. It is supplied with the required gaskets and seals.
Important: This water pump is confirmed for Mazda MX-5 Mk1/NA 1.6-litre models only. The Mk1/NA 1.8 and all Mk2/NB models require a different water pump.
Supply note: The external belt pulley and rear pump cover are not included. Inspect and transfer the original serviceable components where appropriate.
Common reasons for replacement include coolant leakage from the pump body or drain hole, pump-bearing noise, movement at the pulley, poor coolant circulation, overheating, corrosion or replacement during a timing-belt service.

Fitment advice: For the Mazda MX-5, this pump is suitable for the Mk1/NA 1.6-litre engine only. It is not the correct pump for the Mk1/NA 1.8 or any Mk2/NB model. Match the original pump casting, mounting arrangement, 71 mm seven-vane impeller and OE reference before installation, particularly where the engine has previously been replaced or modified.
Other items to consider: When changing the water pump, consider purchasing a timing belt, timing-belt tensioner pulley, timing-belt guide pulley, tensioner spring, fresh coolant, auxiliary belts, coolant hoses, hose clips and replacement mounting hardware where required.
Useful tools / consumables: Drain container, socket and spanner set, crankshaft-pulley tools, timing-reference equipment, torque wrench, gasket-surface cleaning tools, cooling-system funnel, fresh coolant and suitable eye and hand protection.
Difficulty guide: DIY Difficulty: Advanced. The pump is located within the engine timing-belt area, so replacement requires removal and accurate refitting of timing-drive components.
Why RIDEX? RIDEX components provide a cost-effective aftermarket repair option manufactured to application-specific dimensions. This pump uses a cast-aluminium body, metal impeller and supplied sealing components to restore coolant circulation when installed in a correctly maintained cooling system.
What’s in the box: One RIDEX mechanical water pump with gaskets and seals. The external belt pulley, rear cover, timing belt, coolant and mounting hardware are not included unless physically present in the supplied package.
Installation notes: Allow the engine to cool fully before opening the cooling system. Drain the coolant into a suitable container and set the crankshaft and camshafts to the correct timing position before removing the timing belt. Record the belt routing and timing marks. Remove the original pump and clean the mounting surfaces without damaging the aluminium engine casting. Transfer any required serviceable cover or pulley components and fit the supplied seals correctly. Install the replacement pump squarely and tighten the mounting hardware evenly to the applicable specification. Refit and tension the timing belt using the correct Mazda procedure. Rotate the engine manually through at least two complete crankshaft revolutions and recheck the timing marks before starting. Refill with the correct coolant mixture, bleed trapped air from the system and inspect carefully for leaks.
