RIDEX 596O0166 Engine Oil Pump

Replacement RIDEX engine oil pump for Mazda MX-5 Mk3/NC 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol models, plus selected Mazda 3, Mazda 5, Mazda 6 and Mazda CX-7 petrol applications listed in the compatibility table.

The oil pump draws engine oil from the sump and circulates it under pressure through the engine’s internal lubrication passages. This supplies the crankshaft, connecting-rod bearings, camshafts, valvetrain and other moving components with the oil required for lubrication, cooling and protection against accelerated wear.

The pump is installed at the lower front section of the engine and is mechanically driven by the crankshaft or engine timing assembly. One oil pump is required per engine and one pump is supplied.

Common reasons for replacement include a low oil-pressure warning, delayed oil-pressure build-up after starting, abnormal valvetrain or bearing noise, excessive internal pump wear, scoring caused by contaminated oil or damage following an internal engine failure.

Fitment advice: This pump corresponds with the Mazda L310-14-100 reference family and is intended for the confirmed Mazda applications shown in the compatibility table. For the Mazda MX-5, fitment is limited to Mk3/NC 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol engines. Earlier MX-5 B-series engines and later ND SKYACTIV engines are not included. Wider Mazda fitment varies according to the engine and pump originally installed. For imported, modified or previously repaired cars, matching the part number and pump housing design on the component being replaced is recommended.

Other items to consider: When changing this part, you may also want to consider purchasing an oil-pump pickup pipe or strainer, sump gasket or sealant, front crankshaft oil seal, timing-cover seals, oil filter, suitable engine oil, sump-plug washer and any required pump or timing-cover bolts.

Useful tools / consumables: Vehicle lift or trolley jack and axle stands, engine-support equipment where required, socket and spanner set, crankshaft-pulley holding and removal tools, torque wrench, seal-removal and installation tools, gasket scraper, assembly lubricant, engine oil, brake cleaner or degreaser, RTV sealant where specified and an oil-pressure test gauge.

Difficulty guide: DIY Difficulty: Advanced. Replacement normally requires draining the engine oil, removing the sump and front engine or timing components, and carefully resealing the engine during reassembly. Incorrect installation can cause immediate loss of oil pressure and serious engine damage.

Why RIDEX? RIDEX parts are aftermarket replacement components designed to provide a cost-effective repair option for everyday vehicle maintenance and refurbishment. They are intended to replace the original component on the applications listed, helping restore function while keeping repair costs sensible.

What’s in the box: One RIDEX engine oil pump. Separate gaskets, seals, pickup pipework, mounting bolts and timing components are not included unless physically supplied in the package.

Installation notes: Diagnose the cause of low oil pressure before replacing the pump, as worn engine bearings, a restricted pickup strainer, incorrect oil viscosity or internal oil leakage can produce similar symptoms. Drain the engine oil and remove the sump, crankshaft pulley and front engine components required for access. Clean all oil passages and inspect the pickup pipe and strainer for contamination or damage. Prime the replacement pump with clean engine oil or suitable assembly lubricant before installation. Fit new seals and gaskets where required, apply sealant only in the specified locations and tighten all pump, sump, timing-cover and crankshaft fixings to the applicable vehicle specifications. Refill with the correct engine oil, install a new oil filter and build oil pressure before allowing the engine to start normally. Confirm oil pressure with a suitable gauge and check carefully for leaks after installation.
