Genuine Mazda ND6A-41-920 Clutch Release / Slave Cylinder

Replacement Genuine Mazda clutch release cylinder for Mazda MX-5 Mk4 ND and RF models with six-speed manual transmission.

Commonly known as the clutch slave cylinder, this component is mounted on the gearbox and converts hydraulic pressure from the clutch master cylinder into movement of the clutch release mechanism.

When the clutch pedal is pressed, hydraulic fluid travels from the master cylinder through the clutch pipe to the release cylinder. The cylinder extends and operates the clutch fork, allowing the clutch to disengage so that gears can be selected.

Internal seal wear, corrosion or contaminated hydraulic fluid can allow the cylinder to leak or lose pressure. This can reduce clutch-release travel and make gear selection increasingly difficult.

One clutch release cylinder is fitted per vehicle, and this listing supplies one Genuine Mazda cylinder. This component is used only on manual-transmission vehicles.

Part-number note: ND6A-41-920 is the later Mazda cylinder associated with earlier part number N251-41-920. Mazda catalogue diagrams divide the original applications at approximately 28 May 2018, while the current cylinder is also widely catalogued as the service replacement for earlier ND manual-transmission vehicles.

  • Part type: Clutch release cylinder
  • Common name: Clutch slave cylinder
  • Mazda catalogue description: Cyl., Clutch Release
  • Location: Mounted externally on the manual gearbox
  • Function: Converts clutch hydraulic pressure into clutch-fork movement
  • Transmission compatibility: Six-speed manual only
  • Automatic-transmission compatibility: No
  • Quantity fitted per vehicle: 1
  • Quantity supplied: 1 clutch release cylinder
  • Clutch master cylinder included: No
  • Hydraulic pipe included: No
  • Brake / clutch fluid included: No
  • Brand: Genuine Mazda
  • Part No.: ND6A-41-920
  • Earlier Mazda reference: N251-41-920
  • MX-5 fitment: Mk4 ND and RF manual-transmission models

Possible signs of a failing clutch release cylinder:

  • Difficulty selecting first or reverse gear
  • Clutch not disengaging completely
  • Soft, spongy or sinking clutch pedal
  • Reduced clutch release-fork movement
  • Hydraulic fluid leaking around the cylinder
  • Falling fluid level in the clutch reservoir
  • Air repeatedly entering the clutch hydraulic system
  • Gear crunching despite the clutch pedal being fully pressed

Fitment advice: This cylinder is for manual-transmission MX-5 ND and RF vehicles only. Earlier ND models were originally catalogued with N251-41-920, which is associated with the later ND6A-41-920 service part. Confirm that the vehicle retains the original Mazda manual gearbox and clutch hydraulic arrangement.

Other items to consider: Inspect the clutch master cylinder, flexible and rigid hydraulic pipes, pipe unions, clutch fork, release bearing and clutch-fluid condition. A failed master cylinder or leaking hydraulic pipe can produce symptoms similar to a defective slave cylinder.

Useful tools / consumables: Suitable socket and flare-nut spanner set, line clamps where appropriate, brake and clutch fluid of the specified grade, bleed hose, fluid-catching container, brake cleaner and calibrated torque wrench.

Difficulty guide: DIY Difficulty: Moderate. Access is beneath the vehicle and the hydraulic line must be disconnected without damaging its union. The clutch system must be bled thoroughly after installation.

Why Genuine Mazda? Genuine Mazda clutch hydraulic components are manufactured to match the original mounting points, hydraulic connection, cylinder bore, piston travel and clutch-release geometry. Correct dimensions help provide consistent clutch disengagement and compatibility with the original gearbox and hydraulic system.

What’s in the box: One Genuine Mazda clutch release / slave cylinder, part number ND6A-41-920.

Installation notes: Protect painted surfaces from hydraulic fluid and clean the area around the pipe union before disassembly. Disconnect the hydraulic pipe carefully and cap or position it to limit fluid loss and contamination. Remove the cylinder, inspect the clutch fork contact point and fit the replacement component in the original orientation. Reconnect the hydraulic line without cross-threading the union, refill with the specified fluid and bleed the clutch system until all air has been removed. Check for leakage and confirm full clutch disengagement before road use.
