Genuine Mazda P601-17-240 3rd / 4th Gear Synchroniser Clutch Hub Set

Replacement Genuine Mazda 3rd and 4th gear synchroniser clutch hub set for early Mazda MX-5 Mk3 NC models fitted with the six-speed manual transmission.

The clutch hub set forms part of the 3rd/4th synchroniser assembly inside the gearbox. It is mounted on the transmission shaft and works with the selector sleeve, baulk rings and selector fork to connect either third or fourth gear to the shaft.

During a gear change, the selector fork moves the synchroniser sleeve across the hub. The synchroniser components equalise the rotational speeds of the shaft and selected gear before engagement, helping provide a smooth and positive shift.

Wear to the hub splines, sleeve-engagement surfaces or associated synchroniser components can prevent full gear engagement. This may cause baulking, crunching, difficult selection or the gearbox jumping out of third or fourth gear.

Important gearbox restriction: This is the smaller-diameter clutch hub set used in the early MX-5 NC six-speed manual gearbox. The revised Mk3.5 and Mk3.75 gearbox used from approximately 2009 onward has a larger hub and selector-fork arrangement and requires a different component.

One 3rd/4th clutch hub set is fitted per gearbox, and this listing supplies one Genuine Mazda hub set.

Possible signs of a worn or damaged hub set:

  • Difficulty selecting third or fourth gear
  • Gear engagement baulking or crunching
  • Third or fourth gear failing to engage completely
  • Transmission jumping out of third or fourth gear
  • Excessive wear on the hub or sleeve engagement teeth
  • Abnormal movement within the 3rd/4th synchroniser assembly
  • Metallic debris found during gearbox disassembly

Fitment advice: Confirm that the vehicle has the early six-speed manual gearbox before ordering. Engine size or model year alone is not sufficient because five-speed, six-speed, automatic and later revised six-speed transmissions use different internal components. This hub should be matched to the corresponding early, smaller-diameter selector-fork and synchroniser arrangement.

Other items to consider: Inspect the 3rd/4th selector fork, synchroniser sleeve, baulk rings, third and fourth gears, selector rod, detent components, shaft splines and gearbox bearings. Replacing only the hub set may not correct the fault where other synchroniser components are worn or damaged.

Useful tools / consumables: Transmission jack, hydraulic press, bearing separators, suitable pullers, circlip pliers, calibrated torque wrench, shaft-support fixtures, seal-installation tools, assembly lubricant, replacement gearbox seals and the correct manual-transmission oil.

Difficulty guide: DIY Difficulty: Specialist / Advanced. The gearbox must be removed and fully dismantled. Correct shaft support, component orientation, bearing clearances, synchroniser assembly and selector operation are essential.

Why Genuine Mazda? Genuine Mazda synchroniser components are manufactured to match the original shaft splines, selector-sleeve dimensions, gear engagement teeth and associated selector-fork geometry. Correct dimensions are essential for complete gear engagement and smooth synchroniser operation.

What’s in the box: One Genuine Mazda 3rd and 4th gear synchroniser clutch hub set, part number P601-17-240.

Installation notes: Remove and dismantle the gearbox in accordance with the applicable Mazda workshop procedure. Carefully record the position and orientation of the synchroniser hub, sleeve, keys, springs and baulk rings during disassembly. Inspect the complete 3rd/4th synchroniser and selector system before fitting the replacement hub set. Lubricate components during assembly, verify free sleeve movement and confirm complete engagement of third and fourth gears before reinstalling the gearbox. Replace disturbed seals and refill with the specified transmission oil.
