Genuine Mazda L3E3-12-420 2.0L Inlet Camshaft

Replacement Genuine Mazda inlet camshaft for Mazda MX-5 Mk3, Mk3.5 and Mk3.75 / NC models fitted with the 2.0L LF-VE petrol engine from 2005 to 2015 listed in the compatibility table.

The inlet camshaft is mounted within the cylinder head and operates the engine's inlet valves. Its precisely machined cam lobes determine when each inlet valve opens, how far it opens and when it closes, controlling the airflow entering the combustion chambers.

On the 2.0L LF-VE engine, the inlet camshaft operates as part of the variable valve timing system. The camshaft, VVT actuator, timing chain and engine-management system work together to alter inlet valve timing according to engine speed and load.

Correct camshaft profile, timing and bearing-journal condition are essential for stable idle, effective cylinder filling, power delivery, emissions performance and reliable valvetrain operation.

This listing supplies one Genuine Mazda inlet camshaft. One inlet camshaft is fitted per engine.

Replacement may be required where the original camshaft lobes, bearing journals, timing features or VVT mounting surfaces have become worn, scored or damaged. Possible symptoms include valvetrain noise, reduced engine performance, poor idle quality, camshaft timing fault codes, metallic contamination in the engine oil or abnormal wear discovered during cylinder-head inspection.

  • Part type: Inlet camshaft / intake camshaft
  • Primary use: Operates the inlet valves and controls inlet-valve timing
  • Location: Cylinder head / inlet side of the valvetrain
  • Vehicle application: Mazda MX-5 Mk3, Mk3.5 and Mk3.75 / NC 2.0L
  • Engine application: LF-VE 2.0L petrol engine
  • Valve timing system: Variable inlet valve timing
  • Quantity per engine: One
  • Quantity supplied: One inlet camshaft
  • Brand: Genuine Mazda
  • Part No.: L3E3-12-420
  • Also referenced as: L3E312420
  • Engine restriction: 2.0L LF-VE only
  • Not suitable for: MX-5 NC 1.8L engine

Fitment advice: Confirm that the vehicle is fitted with the original Mazda 2.0L LF-VE engine. Compare the original camshaft identification, lobe arrangement, timing features and VVT actuator mounting arrangement before installation. This camshaft should not be assumed to fit the 1.8L engine.

Other items to consider: When changing this part, you may also want to consider purchasing the inlet VVT actuator, camshaft timing bolt and washer, timing chain, chain guides, hydraulic tensioner, camshaft oil seal where applicable, valve-clearance adjustment buckets, cam-cover gasket, engine oil and oil filter.

Useful tools / consumables: Mazda-compatible crankshaft and camshaft timing tools, camshaft holding tool, calibrated torque wrench, micrometer, Plastigauge or suitable journal-clearance measuring equipment, engine assembly lubricant, clean engine oil and the specified timing-cover sealant where the front cover is removed.

Difficulty guide: DIY Difficulty: Advanced. Replacement requires removal of the cam cover and timing components, accurate locking of the crankshaft and camshafts, controlled loosening and tightening of the camshaft bearing caps and verification of valve clearances.

Why Genuine Mazda? Genuine Mazda camshafts are manufactured to the intended lobe profile, journal dimensions, surface hardness, timing relationship and VVT interface specification. Using the correct OE camshaft helps maintain accurate valve operation, proper oil clearances and compatibility with the original Mazda cylinder head, timing and valvetrain components.

What’s in the box: One Genuine Mazda inlet camshaft, part number L3E3-12-420. The VVT actuator, timing sprocket hardware, bearing caps, valve-clearance buckets, seals, timing chain and gaskets are not included unless specifically shown or stated separately.

Installation notes: Inspect the cylinder-head bearing surfaces, camshaft journals, lobes, valve-clearance buckets, timing chain and VVT actuator before installation. Lubricate all journals and lobes with clean engine assembly lubricant, retain each original camshaft cap in its correct position and orientation, and tighten the caps gradually in the Mazda-specified sequence. Set the crankshaft and camshafts to the correct timing position, verify timing-chain alignment and rotate the engine manually before starting. Check and correct valve clearances as required.
