Genuine Mazda Oil Pickup Pipe / Strainer O-Ring – 2.0

Replacement Genuine Mazda oil-pickup-pipe sealing O-ring for Mazda MX-5 Mk3, Mk3.5 and Mk3.75 NC models fitted with the 2.0-litre LF-series petrol engine.

This O-ring seals the connection between the engine-oil pickup pipe, also known as the oil strainer, and the oil-pump inlet. The pickup draws oil from the sump and supplies it to the pump for circulation through the engine.

An effective seal is important because the pickup connection is on the suction side of the lubrication system. A damaged, flattened or incorrectly fitted O-ring can allow air to enter the oil supply before it reaches the pump.

One O-ring is fitted per applicable engine, and this listing supplies one Genuine Mazda seal.

Important fitment restriction: This listing is for the 2.0-litre LF-series MX-5 NC engine. It is not listed here for the 1.8-litre L8 engine.

  • Part type: Oil-pickup-pipe sealing O-ring
  • Common names: Oil-strainer gasket / pickup-tube seal / oil-pump pickup O-ring
  • Mazda catalogue description: Ring, O / Gasket, Oil Strainer
  • System: Engine lubrication system
  • Installation area: Lower engine / engine sump
  • Installation position: Oil pickup pipe to oil-pump inlet connection
  • Function: Seals the oil-pump suction connection
  • Engine application: 2.0-litre LF-series petrol engine
  • Primary MX-5 engine code: LF-VE
  • Quantity fitted per engine: 1
  • Quantity supplied: 1 O-ring
  • Oil pickup pipe included: No
  • Oil pump included: No
  • Sump gasket or sealant included: No
  • Engine oil included: No
  • Brand: Genuine Mazda
  • Part No.: L309-14-248
  • MX-5 fitment: Mk3, Mk3.5 and Mk3.75 NC 2.0

Typical reasons for replacement:

  • Oil pickup pipe removed during engine work
  • Engine sump removed for inspection or resealing
  • Oil pump being replaced or inspected
  • Original O-ring flattened or hardened with age
  • Seal split, cut or damaged during removal
  • Oil-pickup connection disturbed during engine rebuilding
  • Suspected air ingress on the oil-pump suction side
  • Incorrect seal previously fitted

Quantity advice: One O-ring is fitted at the oil-pickup-pipe connection. This listing supplies one seal.

Fitment advice: Confirm that the vehicle is fitted with the 2.0-litre LF-series engine. The MX-5 NC was also produced with a 1.8-litre engine, and the relevant lubrication-system components should be selected by engine application.

Replacement advice: Renew this O-ring whenever the oil pickup pipe is removed. A used seal may remain compressed and may not reseal reliably after reassembly.

Pickup-pipe inspection: Inspect the oil pickup and strainer for sludge, sealant fragments, metallic debris, cracking or damage. Confirm that the strainer mesh is clean and securely attached.

Oil-pump inspection: Where low oil pressure or lubrication concerns prompted dismantling, inspect the oil pump, pressure-regulating components, bearing clearances and oil passages as appropriate.

Sealing-surface advice: Clean the O-ring groove and mating bore carefully. Dirt, old seal material or damage around the connection can prevent the new O-ring from seating correctly.

Lubrication advice: Lightly lubricate the new O-ring with clean engine oil where permitted by the Mazda workshop procedure. Do not install it dry, twisted or pinched.

Sump-sealing advice: If the engine sump is removed for access, clean and reseal it using the correct Mazda procedure and approved sealant. Prevent excess sealant from entering the sump or oil pickup.

Other items to inspect: Check the oil pickup pipe, strainer mesh, oil pump, sump, sump sealing surfaces, oil-pressure switch and any accessible lower-engine oil passages.

Useful tools / consumables: Socket set, calibrated torque wrench, plastic seal-removal tools, suitable parts cleaner, clean engine oil, approved sump sealant where required, replacement oil filter and the specified engine oil.

Difficulty guide: DIY Difficulty: Advanced. Replacing the seal normally requires removal of the engine sump and careful reassembly of the lubrication-system components.

Why Genuine Mazda? Genuine Mazda oil-system seals match the original groove dimensions, pipe connection and oil-pump inlet arrangement. Correct sealing is particularly important on the suction side of the lubrication system, where air ingress may affect oil-pump operation.

What’s in the box: One Genuine Mazda oil-pickup-pipe / oil-strainer sealing O-ring, part number L309-14-248.

Installation notes: Drain the engine oil and remove the sump and oil pickup pipe according to the applicable Mazda workshop procedure. Remove the original O-ring without damaging the sealing groove or mating bore. Clean and inspect the pickup, oil-pump connection and surrounding components. Lubricate and install the new seal as specified, ensuring it is not twisted or pinched. Refit the pickup and sump, refill with the correct engine oil, prime the lubrication system where required and confirm normal oil pressure before road use.
