RIDEX 689C0369 Ignition Coil – MX-5 Mk3 NC 1.8

Replacement RIDEX ignition coil for Mazda MX-5 Mk3/NC, Mk3.5/NC-FL and Mk3.75/NC-FL2 1.8-litre models.

The ignition coil converts the vehicle’s 12-volt electrical supply into the high voltage required by the spark plug to ignite the air/fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber. The MX-5 NC uses an individual coil-on-plug arrangement, allowing each cylinder to be supplied by its own ignition coil.

Important fitment restriction: This coil is for the Mazda MX-5 Mk3/NC 1.8-litre engine. A different ignition coil is required for 2.0-litre NC variants.

Possible symptoms of a failing ignition coil include an engine misfire, rough idle, hesitation under acceleration, difficult starting, reduced performance, increased fuel consumption, an illuminated engine-management light or stored cylinder-misfire fault codes.

Fitment advice: For the Mazda MX-5 this coil is confirmed for 1.8-litre Mk3/NC models produced from March 2005 through December 2014. It corresponds with Mazda references LFB6-18-100A, LFB6-18-100B, LFB6-18-100B9U and LFB6-18-100C. Do not allocate this coil to the 2.0-litre MX-5 NC.

Diagnostic advice: A cylinder misfire does not automatically mean that the ignition coil has failed. Before replacement, inspect the spark plug, coil connector and wiring and check for oil or water contamination around the spark-plug well. Where practical, moving the suspected coil to another cylinder and checking whether the misfire follows the coil can help identify an intermittent coil fault.

Other items to consider: Inspect the spark plugs and replace them if they are worn, fouled or outside their specified service interval. Check the ignition-coil electrical connectors, engine wiring and spark-plug wells for corrosion, heat damage, oil contamination or moisture.

Useful tools / consumables: Socket and ratchet set, spark-plug socket where plugs are also being inspected, torque wrench, electrical contact cleaner and suitable diagnostic equipment for reading and clearing stored engine fault codes.

Difficulty guide: DIY Difficulty: Easy to Moderate. Coil replacement is generally straightforward, but care is required when releasing aged electrical connectors and tightening mounting hardware.

Why RIDEX? RIDEX ignition components provide a cost-effective aftermarket replacement manufactured to the electrical and physical requirements of the intended application. Replacing a defective ignition coil can restore correct spark delivery, smooth engine operation and reliable combustion.

What’s in the box: One RIDEX ignition coil. Spark plug, electrical connector, wiring and installation tools are not included.

Installation notes: Switch off the ignition and allow the engine to cool. Disconnect the ignition-coil electrical connector carefully without pulling on the wiring. Remove the coil retaining hardware and withdraw the coil vertically from the spark-plug well. Inspect the well for oil, moisture or debris and check the spark plug where appropriate. Install the replacement coil fully onto the spark plug, refit its mounting hardware to the applicable specification and reconnect the electrical plug securely. Start the engine and confirm smooth operation. Where a diagnostic trouble code was stored, clear the code and verify that the misfire does not return.
